The School of Education is hosting a virtual doctoral conference: Mapping and Making Research in Shifting Landscapes - Are You Building Bridges or Getting Lost?

General information

The Doctoral Conference Committees together (Bristol and Hong Kong) in the School of Education (SoE), University of Bristol, are delighted to invite you to their Annual Doctoral Conference for the first time in its virtual and combined format.

The annual doctoral conference is a student-led effort to bring together research students, doctoral researchers and academics to explore, contribute and reflect on key issues in educational research, policy, theory and practice from a broad range of research areas. The Virtual Conference will include keynote presentations, workshops, papers in parallel sessions, as well as poster presentations.

We strongly encourage you to seize on this special opportunity to connect and contribute in an intellectually stimulating virtual conference.

Conference theme

The themes of ‘mapping’ and ‘making’ refer to the tools of making research real and impactful in contemporary shifting landscapes. ‘Mapping’ your dissertation may feel overwhelming; which part do you capture first? In contexts of equity, widening access, the drive to innovate and broaden the research landscape, the act of ‘making’ can also seem like an impossible task. We believe we can learn from each other and expert researchers by coming together in the spirit of shared enquiry and determination to continue building bridges. With this in mind, we are creating an opportunity for students, early-career and experienced researchers to contribute their unique perspectives and research in a safe and supportive space.

There will be an interactive workshop combined with keynote speakers.

You are invited to use this opportunity to have your research, whatever stage you are at, reviewed by your peers, academics and receive feedback. We encourage contributions that align with the key themes of equity, widening access and innovation within the broader themes of ‘mapping’ and ‘making’ research. We particularly welcome contributions with a methodological focus. As virtual academic events become more necessary, this is an opportunity to enhance your online/virtual presentation skills, socialise, and build bridges in a friendly forum.

Guidelines for all submissions

We welcome abstracts from all research students at any stage of their academic journey, from MRes students to those who have concluded their doctoral degrees recently.
We encourage you to submit an abstract by Friday 15th May for one of the following:

  1. 15 minutes live or recorded oral presentation with 5 minutes Q&A
  2. 5 minutes live or recorded quick-fire presentation
  3. Poster presentations

Submission details

Please keep in mind that your audience will be from various cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds. While we are all broadly familiar with educational research, policy, and practice, we may not have expertise on your topic.

We encourage you to submit an abstract following the steps below:

  1. At the top of the document, please include the full name (as you prefer it to appear in the programme) of the author (s), Affiliation (School/Department/University), Email address/es, Year of Study (if applicable), Mode of Study (PhD, EdD, MRes) and type of presentation ( 15 minute, 5 minute, or poster presentation).
  2. Please include a title for your submission, then include an abstract with a maximum of 250 words.
  3. The abstract format is single-spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman. Please use APA style reference citations (surname, year), a reference list is not needed. Consolidate it into one single Adobe PDF file.
  4. Please include the following information in the file name: submission type (Paper, Quickfire or Poster), and surname of submitting author, e.g. Paper_Surname.pdf.
  5. Please also indicate if you are willing to be considered for an alternate format (e.g., poster instead of individual paper or 5 min. presentation instead of 15 min.)
  6. Please note: Considering the unprecedented circumstances in which we must operate and to accommodate colleagues who live in different time zones, we encourage you to pre-record your presentation in case you are not able to give a live presentation for any reason.
  7. If you are able to present live, the organising committee will create an opportunity for you to practice and familiarise yourself with Blackboard Collaborate before the conference.
