Bristol Teaching Awards 2019: Nominations for Outstanding Team & Outstanding Teaching

3 May 2019

We are pleased to announce that the School of Education has received three nominations at this years’ Bristol Teaching Awards.

The School of Education’s PGCE team has been nominated for the Outstanding Team Award, an award which recognises exceptional work teams who add significant value to the Faculty and to the wider University.

The nomination follows a hugely successful year for the PGCE team. The Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses have recently been ranked as ‘Outstanding’ in all four categories: overall effectiveness, outcomes for trainees, quality of training, and quality of leadership and management by Ofsted. The ITE courses have also seen a significant increase in application numbers, at a time when teacher recruitment has dropped by a third nationally. This prompted Rt Hon Damian Hinds, the Secretary of State for Education, to visit the School of Education to better understand how to attract people to the teaching profession and retain teachers.

The School of Education’s Dr Simon Brownhill has also been nominated by students for the Outstanding Teaching Award. This award which recognises members of staff who have made an outstanding contribution to teaching, the provision of support for students and education. Simon, who joined the School of Education in September 2018, is a Lecturer in Education and is the Teaching and Learning Pathway Lead.

The School of Education's Trang Tran has been nominated for a Students’ Award for Outstanding Teaching by a PGR in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Acting Head of School, Prof. Melissa Allen said, "I’ve had the pleasure of having Trang as a TA multiple times and can certainly endorse the excellence of her teaching and popularity amongst students".

The Bristol Teaching Awards will take place on the 12 June, at the Wills Memorial Building, where the winners will be announced on the night.

On behalf of the School, we would like to congratulate the PGCE team, Simon and Trang for their well-deserved nominations. Best of luck!
