This event is part of the School of Education's 'Bristol Conversations in Education' seminar series. These seminars are free and open to the public.
Speaker: Dr Sara Bragg
How do we know about children’s lives in a digitally saturated world? How is the way we research and document childhood’s everyday lives transformed by, and mediated through, technology? This seminar will reflect on some of the methodological and ethical issues that arose in a qualitative longitudinal study ('Everyday Childhoods'). After introducing the project’s aims and methods, the paper will focus on the specific dilemmas of our micro-ethnographic ‘day in a life’ studies using photography, audio-recording and note-taking. It will ask whether and what researchers’ subjective and affective responses to shadowing children in schools might tell us about the conditions of contemporary education.
