MERN - Proof and Mathematics Education in Hong Kong

To promote learning mathematics with understanding, mathematics educators in many countries recommend that proof play a central role in school mathematics. In response to this recommendation, I examined the opportunities for students to learn reasoning-and-proving when they are using a popular senior secondary school mathematics textbook series in Hong Kong.
In this seminar, Kwong Wong will present his research methodology and findings, and discuss how proof is being treated in school mathematics in Hong Kong – a high-achieving country (or region) in school mathematics. He will also discuss the influences that Chinese culture may have on issues concerning understanding in school mathematics.
