Bristol Conversations in Education - What do we mean by 'validity' when talking about testing and assessment in education

24 May 2017, 1.00 PM - 24 May 2017, 2.00 PM

Prof. Harvey Goldstein

Room 4.10 35 Berkeley Square, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1JA

This event is part of the Graduate School of Education's 'Bristol Conversations in Education' seminar series.

The term ‘validity’ is one of the most important and one of the most debated concepts in educational assessment and testing. I will argue that the various different approaches can all be viewed from what I call an associational or correlational perspective. I also argue that our understanding is enhanced by adopting some basic ideas of scientific reasoning to the process of establishing validity and making fully transparent the assumptions and procedures used by both test and assessment constructors and by users.

There will be refreshments available before the event.
