Exploring diversity together
GSoE students from the MEd Special and Inclusive Education and pupils from St Katherine’s School in Pill, Bristol
4.10, 35 Berkeley Square, Bristol BS8 1JA
This event is part of the Festival of Education series from 3 - 15 June 2015.
The pupils from St Katherine’s School in Pill and students from the MEd Special and Inclusive Education in the Graduate School of Education have been collaborating on an arts based project to create an exhibition exploring concepts of global diversity. Four groups of GSoE students and St Katherine's pupils have been making artefacts, constructing stories, taking photos and film making to document the cultural exchange between them. Projects are focused on the following areas: Monuments of the world – connecting monuments in Bristol with famous places all over the world. This group were interested in ‘Wonders of the World’ and ‘Wonders of Bristol’. A second group is interested in the project as an embodiment of Chinese, Taiwanese and western (mainly British) childhood memories in a quadrangle courtyard setting. This group have constructed an imaginary encounter and interaction of cross cultural childhood (which will be presented by toys, games, ornaments and performing art) taking place in a comparatively reserved, enclosed Taiwanese architecture in an agrarian and collectivist society. Group three is investigating Knowledge and Culture across the globe (looking at the development of knowledge and the influence of Greek culture and history). Finally, Group Four have focused upon the use of arts and crafts to explore our cultural stories. They will be comparing the use of arts and crafts in Bristol and in China. The exhibition will be interactive and available to look at for the duration of the Festival. In this presentation event, each group will explain their processes of creating exhibits and reflect on their learning about each other in the process of making artefacts.
