Excellent Research Environment
Bristol's Department of Economics has many advantages, including an enthusiastic research community, a welcoming atmosphere and excellent research facilities. The Department is large enough to have expertise in many fields, but small enough to be friendly and to allow regular contact between students and staff members.
Research facilities are very good, with extensive provision of networked software and databases, and online access to all leading journals. Our undergraduate students have access to a number of well-equipped computer suites. And we aim to offer our MPhil and PhD students access to communal office space and sole use of a computer, even in their first year of research.
What our students say
Here's what some of our PhD students have said about their experience at Bristol.
- Bristol is a lively city, with a lot of opportunities. The atmosphere at the CMPO is really friendly and familiar. You could easily talk to everybody and get a lot of support. Working on your thesis in such an international PhD community is very enriching. So far it was definitely the right decision to come to Bristol. (Daniel Grote)
- I have found a really friendly environment between staff and PhD students that occurs not only at the regular seminars but also at the coffee room and even the corridors ... I am really enjoying my PhD here. (Osiris Parcero)
- The most striking thing about the Bristol PhD programme is, to me, how close-knit and friendly the Bristol Economics academic community is. Many of the friendships I built during the programme, both with other students and professors endure to this day, and some have resulted in productive research partnerships. Bristol has opened up opportunities for me that otherwise would have been unattainable. (Dr Andreas Bentz, former PhD student, now Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Dartmouth College, USA).
