The research in each department is assessed according to the following table:

RAE2008 quality levels

Scale Definition
4* Quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
3* Quality that is internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour but which nonetheless falls short of the highest standards of excellence.
2* Quality that is recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
1* Quality that is recognised nationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

The 2008 scores in the table are based on the proportions of research in each of these scales.

85% of research in Bristol's Economics Department was assessed as 4* or 3*. All Bristol's research in Economics and Econometrics was considered to be internationally recognized.
