The EarthArt Initiative

The artworks displayed in this area of the University are part of an ongoing collaboration between Bristol based artists and staff and students from the School of Earth Sciences and wider academic community at the University of Bristol.

The 2019 EarthArt Fellowships are made possible through a generous donation from Sarah Robinson in memory of her late husband, artist David Robinson.

Event Series 2019

A series of artist-led events in the School of Earth Sciences. The workshops, talks and gallery tours are run by Spike Island artists Olivia Jones and Milo Newman and are a reflection on their six month EarthArt fellowships, during which both collaborated with staff and students from the School of Earth Sciences to discuss global themes such as climate change, natural hazards, and the human perception of and interaction with our planet.

Olivia’s exhibition ‘Tephra: Order in the Dust’ is currently on show in the EarthGallery in the Wills Memorial Building, including screen prints and clay sculptures. Olivia explored the behaviour and materiality of volcanic ash particles, clouds and plumes, with an intention to create a body of work that looks into the methodologies, technologies and interface between science and art.

Milo’s recently launched book ‘The mapping of Jan Mayen’ reinterprets an archive of scientific papers, maps, photographs and rock samples from the Earth Sciences Collection. It interweaves episodes of memory, materiality, science, history and geography, to tell the story of a 1938 surveying expedition to the Arctic island of Jan Mayen made by Donald Ashby, a young geologist and staff member of the University of Bristol.
