Professor Susan Waldron, University of Glasgow
Room G25, Reynolds Lecture Theatre, School of Earth Sciences, Wills Memorial Building
We are pleased to welcome Professor Susan Waldron from the University of Glasgow who will be delivering the School Seminar:-
Title: C and N cycling in the karst critical zone
Karst landscapes account for ~ 20% of the ice-free global terrestrial environment, representing an important lithological C store, and providing water for approximately one-quarter of the world population. Its capacity for dissolution results in loss of stored lithological C and generates flow pathways that are hydrologically variable, and discharge sensitive to surface land use. This talk is about two research projects based in a rural catchment in SW China, where the population generally live below the poverty line and so a high quality environment is crucial. Both projects use a Critical Zone Framework, sensor technology, and isotope tracers, to understand how C is lost to the atmosphere and how run-off waters are nitrate polluted.
All staff and students welcome.
