We are pleased to welcome Professor Mike Kendall from the University of Bristol who will be delivering the School Seminar:-

Title: Plate formation at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Insights from the PI-LAB experiment or Mike at Sea

Abstract:

The PI-LAB experiment involved a one-year deployment of nearly 80 ocean-bottom sensors across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The aim was to study the formation of tectonic plates at a slow spreading centre, providing insights into the nature of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB). The results are providing new images of how molten material decouples newly-formed plates from the underlying mantle, potentially providing an unexpectedly significant driving force for tectonics on Earth. I will also show some nice pictures of doing a seismic experiment at sea.

All staff and students welcome.
