Bristol Industrial PhD Placement Fund

The Bristol Industrial PhD Placement Fund is supported by the EPSRC National Productivity Investment Fund. It encourages innovative, creative and collaborative ways for PhD students to experience working within industry and gaining new skills.

The Bristol Doctoral College is excited to offer a new opportunity to enhance the PhD experience with the launch of the Bristol Industrial PhD Placement Fund. The Bristol Industrial PhD Placement Fund is an EPSRC-funded initiative which supports short placements of up to 3 months in duration in a range of sectors to experience different work environments. PhD students who take on a placement will be able to apply their technical, research and professional skills across different contexts outside of academia.

'All students funded by EPSRC are eligible for this funding, provided Academic approval is granted.

Any placement with an external organisation must align with the EPSRC Industrial Strategy challenge in one of the following areas:

  • Smart, flexible & clean energy technologies
  • Robotics & artificial intelligence
  • Satellite & space technology
  • Leading-edge healthcare and medicine
  • Manufacturing processes and materials of the future
  • Bioscience & biotechnology
  • Quantum technologies
  • Transformative digital technology
  • Creative Industries

We welcome proposals for placements directly from doctoral researchers in Science and Engineering.

It is recommended to write a joint proposal with the company who will host your placement. While preparing your joint proposal, please ensure that a company who will host your placement agrees with the Guidance for host organisations (PDF, 157kB).

How to apply

Applications are open from 6 February 2019 and will be offered on a rolling basis. All applicants will be notified within four weeks of their success or otherwise.

You may have links with a specific organisation you would like to work with. Please discuss appropriate potential projects to then jointly apply for this funding.

The placement opened my eyes to a whole new area of research and career opportunities that I would never have considered before. Even with a project so far removed from my field of research, it was impossible not to notice crossovers. It has given me confidence that I can adapt and be a useful asset to a company.
