Volunteering

You can volunteer in a school to help asylum seeking and refugee children with their English. This is done at primary and secondary level. Please contact Harriet for more details, (hj5225). You can mentor asylum seekers with Bristol Defend the Asylum Seekers Campaign. The first Tuesday of every month, BDASC hold a meeting in which they are regularly joined by asylum seekers looking for help. You can come along and volunteer of your own accord, helping in any manner of ways, from helping with English homework, meeting for a coffee and a chat, or going to the library and showing them the resources available. Please contact any of the committee for more details.

At Brunswick Square in St. Paul’s every Wednesday, there is a drop-in centre for asylum seekers. A free meal is provided for them, as well as English lessons, various activities, such as art, sewing and knitting and a general social outlet. To volunteer here, please contact Harriet, (hj5225). Those with previous experience teaching English, or those who speak another language are especially encouraged to volunteer.

All of the above volunteering opportunities require reliability. However, each one can be tailored to accommodate your personal timetable and you can decide how much time and effort you wish to dedicate.

Ongoing activities

STAR meets every Monday evening at 6pm in union (room details will be provided via email hopefully). Each week is different with a series of speakers, activities and films to watch. To find out what we do on a weekly basis, email Onny (oi5545) to join the mailing list, or just turn up.
