Derriford Hospital in Plymouth

Derriford hospital is a large general hospital with 850 beds. Provides secondary acute services to a population of 428,000, For neurosurgery, cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery it covers 1.25 million.

Derriford is a designated Head and Neck cancer centre. The department is involved in a full range of maxillofacial procedures including  management of major head and neck oncology with microvascular reconstruction, craniofacial reconstruction following trauma and anterior skull base access surgery. Derriford is the major trauma centre for the South West Peninsula. The department is part of the Peninsula University teaching hospital and runs regular Specialist Study Units for Medical and Dental Students. Junior staff are encouraged to take part in teaching.

We are recognised as a friendly department with excellent junior staff who are well supported and have an excellent record of achieving higher qualifications during their stay. Juniors will often stay on for more than the designated year. The department was purpose built in 1993.

Details of posts

There are five SHO's (Maxillofacial) and one F2 from the surgical rotation. Two posts are available for dentists following their first post graduate year in practice or equivalent. The hospital is minutes away from Dartmoor and excellent beaches in Devon and Cornwall. The area has a full range of social amenities, a commercial sports centre opposite the hospital and on site there is also a sport and leisure centre with excellent facilities.
