The eighteenth BUOLD Periodontology course is due to start in Autumn 2012. It is important to understand that knowledge of periodontal disease is changing very rapidly; it is difficult even for specialists to keep abreast of current knowledge. The course is intended to give participants a sound knowledge of the ‘foundations’ of periodontology on which to base clinical decisions.
Subjects covered include:
- Current concepts of the various types of periodontal disease, their diagnosis and treatment
- The treatment modalities available, when to use them and how to carry them out
- The CPITN system and how to apply its use to your practice
- The periodontal – restorative interface
- The use of maintenance programmes and how to apply them
- Management of the furcation involved molar
- The use of locally delivered and systemic antibiotics
- Guided tissue regeneration
Unit Objectives
By the end of the course students will:
- Be able to list the causes of periodontal disease
- Be able to describe the various types of periodontal disease
- Be able to list the diagnostic systems and their uses
- Describe the types of therapy and their indications
- Have read the key scientific papers in the subject
There will be high quality elements (modules) plus three study days to introduce topics and provide discussion groups. The first study day will be held at the Mount Somerset Hotel, Taunton in October 2012.
