Summary

My principle role is to deliver teaching in areas of the undergraduate curriculum with academic, senior academic and clinical academic staff for a number of Divisions within the Department.

However, I have been involved in research at various times in my career; this has mostly been directed specifically in the area of dental and denture aesthetics.  A more significant project I used as a basis for a MSc, and out of this numerous publication have arisen.  At some point a change in the direction of my work moved me towards teaching and away from research over the past few years.

Biography

The principle responsibilities I hold include the:

  • Provision of student understanding and knowledge through a series of practical and theoretical skills exercises across the main dental disciplines.
  • Element lead for Restorative Skills 3 and course organiser for Removable Prosthetic Dentures 2 in the Unit of Dental Skills Year 3.
  • Delivering areas of the disciplines of Restorative Dentistry and Child Dental Health with clinical and academic staff, by utilising teaching methods such as microteaching, group teaching, lectures, seminars and practical demonstrations.
  • Planning of course structure, content and timetabling, the devising and implementation of practical and theoretical student assessment.
  • Development of student transferable skills through a series of progressive practical skills exercises aimed at establishing those skills necessary for clinical application.
  • Guidance of students in the design and prescription of patient dental restorations and treatment planning, prior to undertaking construction of removable partial dentures.
  • Management of teaching facilities including facility administration; bookings, organising resources and equipment for use by students and external bodies; ensuring safe working practices of students, staff and visitors in line with national and local health and safety regulations and control of materials and equipment in line with COSHH regulations.

Development of innovative teaching methods with the provision of additional educational material e.g. e-learning programs and video production for undergraduate and postgraduate use.

Teaching

My principle role is to deliver teaching in areas of the undergraduate curriculum with academic, senior academic and clinical academic staff for a number of Divisions within the Department.

As a Teaching Associate, I teach dental undergraduates clinical and technical procedures and techniques to ensure students acquire suitable transferable skills and knowledge, which will enable them to design, prescribe, adjust and manipulate dental restorations and prostheses. The students’ primary knowledge from their pre-clinical years is drawn on to develop dexterity, to diagnose and prescribe for patient treatment. Through a range of assessments students are tested on theoretical and practical knowledge and competence. Teaching is delivered principally for the Division of Restorative Dentistry, encompassing Prosthetics, Conservation and Periodontology, but also for other Divisions and areas within the Department. This includes the Division of Child Dental Health and United Bristol Healthcare Trust (UBHT) nursing staff.
