INSPIRE Studentships

5 May 2017

Year 4 students Alexander Gormley & Christina Tran have been awarded prestigious INSPIRE summer studentships. The national INSPIRE scheme is designed to engage medical, dental and veterinary undergraduate students with research.

Alex will spend his one-month placement in the Centre for Surgical Research on a project supervised by Prof Jane Blazeby and Dr Barry Main, looking at issues around blinding in early phase surgical studies. The project will contribute to the work of the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre.

Christina will spend time in the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit on a project supervised by Dr Gemma Sharp looking at the association between maternal stress and orofacial cleft, which will form part of the ongoing work of the Cleft Collective.

Head of Teaching Dr Dave Dymock is delighted to see that dental students are engaging with research opportunities in the Faculty, evidenced by applications and success in gaining INSPIRE studentships, and also by increasing numbers of students choosing to intercalate.

Whilst competition for INSPIRE studentships is fierce, Christina and Alex have demonstrated what is possible with careful preparation, and we wish them well with their research projects, and hope other dental students will be INSPIRE-d to apply in future years.
