Dawn Primarolo, MP for Bristol South recently visited the Community Based Teaching Department, South Bristol Community Hospital. Having officially opened the hospital two years ago,
A tour of the department enabled her to meet therapy and dental students as well as clinical teachers and nursing staff. The student dental therapists, led by tutor Mrs Karen Duncan detailed their scope of practice and role within a skill mixed dental team. The opportunities created for therapists by the introduction of Direct-Access arrangements were also explained. Dental students explained the importance of radiographs in the diagnosis of caries.
Ms Primarolo then received a presentation on how high quality outreach teaching supported the training of Dental Students and Dental Care Professionals which highlighted the quality assurance processes and the likely future developments of the department.
