PhD student Afya Al-Radha wins first prize for her poster presentation at the British Society for Restorative Dentistry Spring Meeting
Congratulations go to Afya Al-Radha, who was awarded the 2012 Postgraduate Research Prize for her poster presentation at the British Society for Restorative Dentistry Spring Meeting. Afya is currently in the final year of her PhD, under the supervision of Professor Howard Jenkinson, and presented her research into peri-implantitis, entitled ‘Bacterial detection in peri-implant disease conditions’. This work has shown that denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), combined with DNA sequence analysis, is a comprehensive and sensitive microbiological tool for detection and identification of multiple bacterial species. Such methodologies could be exploited to identify the bacterial communities involved in peri-implant disease conditions, enabling clinicians to provide a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
