IACMI – Composites Institute and Applications Development in Long and Continuous Fiber Thermoplastics

Summary: The seminar is organized into two parts – (a) The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) is the nation’s largest institute in advanced composites technologies for automotive, wing and compressed gas storage. The IACMI is part of the Presidential initiative in establishing a national network of manufacturing institutes. The structure and public-private partnership of the IACMI will be discussed; and (b) There is a tremendous interest and growth in thermoplastic composites. Recent work done in applications for transportation and defense with discontinuous and continuous fiber thermoplastics will be presented.

Short bio: Uday Vaidya has a joint appointment with The University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the Oak Ridge National Lab. He is the UT/ORNL Governor's Chair in Advanced Composites Manufacturing. Vaidya serves as the Chief Technology Officer for IACMI.  Prior to joining UT/ORNL, Vaidya served as the Department Chair for Materials Science & Engineering and the Center Director for the Composites Center at UAB. Vaidya has 28 years of experience in a broad range of composites for defense, transportation and industrial applications. Vaidya is the author of the book 'Composites for Automotive, Mass Transit and Truck'.
