The impact of policy intervention

Policy interventions on the supply side of the education quasi-market impact both on schools and on neighbourhoods. In the following project we exploit a recent intervention by one local authority to provide evidence on the impact of a change in admissions policy, focusing on potential changes in school and neighbourhood sorting.

Lotteries and school admissions (Simon Burgess, Steve Machin (CEE), Anna Vignoles (CEE))

We will study the impact of Brighton’s decision to use lotteries for admission to oversubscribed schools in Brighton. Using a series of pupil censuses, matched with spatial data on neighbourhoods and house prices, we will examine changes in school intake following the new admissions code. We hope to secure access to the data on parental preferences from Brighton local authority to investigate changes in school applications.
