MSc in Economics and Public Policy

MSc studentsThe School of Economics, Finance and Management is drawing on CMPO expertise to offer a specialised Masters degree in Economics and Public Policy. This is a rigorous economics Masters programme, which allows students to specialise in the application of economics to public policy issues. It has been specially designed to meet the needs of economists working in, or with, the public sector, whether in government, a private sector consultancy or a not-for-profit organisation. It also provides excellent training for those who want to pursue further research in this area at PhD level and students taking the MSc in Economics and Public Policy will be eligible for ESRC studentships on a “1+3” basis.

The programme is taught over twelve months. The first semester comprises four core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, applied economics and quantitative methods. These courses build on skills learned at undergraduate level and provide a solid foundation for specialisation in the second semester.

In the second semester students take four further courses:

Over the summer, students will work on a 15,000 word research dissertation, supervised by a senior member of CMPO staff, to be completed by September. The CMPO has a wide range of applied and theoretical projects which students can become involved with.
