Neonatal Medicine

Welcome to the Neonatal Medicine web pages

BABY-WITH-CARERThe Neonatal Medicine Group investigates the mechanisms of brain injury in newborn infants and develops treatments to protect and repair the neonatal brain so reducing long term disability.

Running clinical trials of new treatments in critically ill babies is a demanding task. Lack of oxygen during labour and delivery at full term can cause severe brain injury and serious disability. Bristol was one of three centres in the world to pioneer hypothermia to protect the brain of babies affected.

Investigating the long term effects of premature birth and ways of improving developmental outcome are also part of the research programme of the Group.
