Dr Hawes is interested in ancient traditions of myth and storytelling, and the Greeks' assessments of these phenomena within their own culture. Her doctoral research examined the ancient tradition of rationalistic interpretation, in which the fabulous narratives of the mythological canon were recast as misunderstood accounts of actual events. She is currently working on a wide-ranging study of Pausanias as a storyteller which examines the roles played by myths in the Periegesis in enhancing the significance of the physical landscape and bolstering a sense of local and collective identity.
