MA in Classical Reception

Modern CenturionsThis innovative programme will give you the opportunity to engage in depth with the different ways in which the classical past, and its literature, art and ideas, have been received and appropriated in the post-classical world. Bristol has been at the forefront of the field of classical reception studies for more than twenty years, and we offer a broad and theoretically-informed approach to the subject, aimed at developing the skills and knowledge necessary for such interdisciplinary studies. You will be encouraged to reflect on reception theories and methodologies and to consider the ways classical material is reinterpreted in different contexts; you will also have the opportunity to gain a grounding new disciplinary areas as appropriate to your research interests, for example in history of art or film theory.

As a postgraduate student, you will participate fully in our active and vibrant research culture; the department has a weekly research seminar, which regularly focuses on reception-related topics; Bristol’s Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition organises seminars and conferences throughout the year; and you are also encouraged to attend relevant seminars and lectures in other departments. After twenty years at the leading edge of the field, Bristol academics continue to engage in exciting and ambitious interdisciplinary projects. Professors Martindale and Hopkins are co-editing the five-volume Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature (one of the largest projects in literary reception ever undertaken), Professor Morley is leading an international research project on the modern reception of Thucydides and Dr Shelley Hales is working on the reception of Pompeii, including a virtual recreation of the ‘Pompeian House’ in the Crystal Palace Exhibition.
