Funding Opportunities
Some of the following resources pertain to PGRs (postgraduate research students). some to both PGRs and PGTs (taught postgraduate students).
University of Bristol (not subject-specific)
Within the university, the single biggest source of PG funding of all kinds (scholarships, research expenses, and conference support) is the Graduate School of Arts and Humanities. See also BIRTHA and the Alumni Foundation travel grants (for PGRs presenting their research findings at conferences).The Head of Subject (or Subject Lead) has overall responsibility for PGRs and will help if possible.
Nation-wide (and specific to Classics and Ancient History)
- Subscribe to the CLASSICISTS email list for information on funding, jobs, seminars, conferences: send an email to listserv@listserv@liverpool.ac.uk. No subject line; message: subscribe classicists [your name]
- Thomas Wiedemann Memorial Fund (www.thomaswiedemann.org.uk): research-related travel in the UK (visits to universities, libraries, museums, etc); attendance at seminars and conferences and presentation of papers, in the UK. Professor Buxton is a trustee.
- Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies (www.hellenicsociety.org.uk): Dr Michelakis is Secretary. Small grants to institutions for conferences, productions of Greek drama, and other events. Dover Fund: grants to PGRs and postdocs for history of Greek language and exegesis of Greek texts, including inscriptions and papyri.
- Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies (www.romansociety.org): Hugh Last and Donald Atkinson funds, which include small grants to PGRs for visits to conferences and other research expenses.
- Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies (www.byzantium.ac.uk): PGR grants for travel to conferences and exhibitions, in the UK and abroad, across the range of the subject (which includes late antiquity). Small grants to PGRs to support conferences and workshops.
Many conferences advertise graduate bursaries funded by the Classical Association.
