The School of Chemistry is committed to providing an environment of good employment practices and working environments for women, to tackling the unequal representation of women in science and to improving career progression for female academics.
The introduction of Athena SWAN polices benefits both male and female staff. We are reviewing our working practices to ensure that all staff and students are well supported in their work and study.

Following a consultation among the School of Chemistry undergraduate and postgraduates the Women-in-Chemistry Mentoring scheme was launched. In the December 2011 meeting, a panel composed of women from the department at different stages of their scientific career met with undergraduates and postgraduates to discuss career choices and future mentoring initiatives.

Future meetings will be held on the first Wednesday of every month at 3.30pm in the Postgraduate Coffee Lounge. All staff, postdocs and post graduate students (male and female) are welcome to attend our next informal meeting on Wednesday 4 December 2013.
Women-in Science Mentoring Meeting - 7th February 2013
· Plans were finalised for a competition to be run by the School of Chemistry Scientific Women’s Academic Network to seek ideas for "How we can promote women to realise their potential in science”
· There was unanimous support to hold a get-together over lunch to celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday 8 March
All staff, postdocs and post graduate students (male and female) are invited to bring lunch – either just for you or better still bring something to share – to an informal get together in the Coffee Lounge 1-2 pm. During lunch you will have an opportunity to vote for the best entry in the competition. We will also be supporting Oxfam’s work to transform the lives of women living in poverty around the world by collecting donations.

SoapboxScience - congratulations to Bristol Chemistry PhD student Julie Dunne who entered SoapboxScience and has been selected to speak. Her talk will cover the chemistry of milk molecules found in archeological artefacts, these give a clue to ancient farming practices.
