Make-up box

Eric Jones-Evans was an actor and collector of theatre memorabilia, who donated his extensive archive to the Theatre Collection. Included is much ephemera relating to the actor and producer John Martin-Harvey, and the great actor-manager of the Victorian era, Henry Irving. This traditional theatre make-up box belonged to Jones-Evans himself. It contains sticks of greasepaint, powders and rouges. But amongst the make-up are some more unusual items including a rabbit’s foot and a silver charm. The theatre is known for superstition, and these items may have been considered by Jones-Evans to bring him good luck for his performances.
