Picturing China

The exhibition 'Picturing China 1870-1950: Photographs from British
Collections' runs from 16 October to 15 December 2007 at the Brunei
Gallery, SOAS, near Russell Square, London WC1

The exhibition at SOAS will consist of 112 wonderful framed black and white
photos, being the best images digitised so far by the Historical
Photographs of China project. The images have been arranged in six themes:
Commerce & Industry, Everyday Life, Women, Customs Service, Politics &
Protest, Foreigners in China.

There are also two screenings (Urban scenes and Rural scenes/landscapes, 30
images in each), one projection (a Boat Journey by sea and river, 15
panoramic images), six 'Old China Hands' portraits (People born in China
before 1949 and now living in the UK, holding an item of value/relevance
from their China days, photographed in colour) and eleven cabinets of
related objects/books/documents etc.

In December, a cut down version of the exhibition moves to the Museum of
East Asian Art in Bath, and in April 2008 it opens at the Oriental Museum,
Durham.
