Symposium on Academic Freedom
The Centre for East Asian Studies co-organized a Symposium on 'Academic Freedom' as part of the research activities of 'Ideas and Universities' an interdisciplinary research workshop in the Institute for Advanced Studies on 13 June 2007 at Verdon-Smith, Institute for Advanced Studies, University of Bristol. Professor Eric Thomas, Vice Chancellor of Bristol University, gave a key-note speech on 'Academic Freedom and the University'.
Other speakers included Professor Ka Ho Mok and Dr. Maurizio Marinelli from Centre for East Asian Studies; Dr. Weipin Tsai from Department of Historical Studies; Professor Alexander Kosenina from Department of German and Dr. Lisa Lucas from Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol. A guest speaker Professor John Taylor from the University of Southampton was also invited to speak on the topic. Speakers attempted to compare and contrast the diverse meaning and definitions of 'academic freedom' and how different the experiences between the West and the East. During the symposium, Professor Mok launched his new book 'Academic Freedom in Hong Kong' (co-authored with Jan Currie and Carole Petersen)
