Profile
Helen Phillips is Deputy Director for Applied Foreign Languages at the
University of Bristol Language Centre. She was formerly Director of the
Open Language Programme at London Metropolitan University where she taught
French at undergraduate level and extensively on commercial language training
programmes. Helen has also taught English as a foreign language in Québec,
Canada and France. Helen was appointed to the Language Centre in October
2002 and introduced Mandarin Chinese onto the applied foreign language
undergraduate curriculum in 2004. Mandarin Chinese and Japanese language
training will form an integral component of the MSc
in East Asian Studies from 2005.
Her publications include the textbook French Foundations 1 (Palgrave 2001),
the first language series to be written specifically for institution-wide
language programmes and now used widely in HE institutions. She is also
co-author of En Train de Parler, The Teachers’ Guide, a French language
course written specifically for Eurostar UK. Helen has presented a number
of papers on the management of language programmes in HE at the National
Conference for Institution-Wide Language Programmes.
