Profile

I have been working with research colleagues in Japanese universities since 1986, and visiting regularly since 1991. All scholarship on Marx (other than Marxist economics, which is a separate field) that has been exported to ‘the West’ has come through me, and I am currently finalising an edited collection Marx for the 21st Century which marks the first Japanese ‘showcase’ volume on the subject in English. I have also written special introductions to two English translations of scholarly works on Marx by Japanese authors. More recently (October 2004) I have been speaking in Japan on my other research area: sex, gender and sexuality, particularly as applied methodologically to International Relations and feminist thought/gender studies. Besides the above, I have visited many Japanese universities (about 15), working for the University’s International Centre, which funds 10% of my time at Bristol. This involves meeting foreign study officers, courtesy calls on university presidents and the like, as well as prospective students and sometimes interested academic staff, particularly in politics and international relations. I have been offered a visiting professorship at Senshu University for September 05-January 06, and details are being finalised. I have been involved in similar activities in Korea since the late 1990s and also in Hong Kong, where I have visited the major universities and will be visiting professor (at Lingnan University) in January 05.
