2nd Bristol Postgraduate Network for East Asian Studies Conference
Challenges for East Asia: The Past, Present & Future
7th-8th July 2010
University of Bristol
CALL FOR PAPERS
About the Conference
We warmly invite postgraduate research students at any stage of their PhD and scholars, particularly at the early stage of their career, to join the BRIDGE (Bristol Postgraduate Network for East Asian Studies) Conference on the 7th and 8th of July 2010.
BRIDGE is now holding its 2nd conference at the University of Bristol with the general topic of 'Challenges for East Asia: The Past, Present & Future'. The conference will provide a valuable opportunity for postgraduate students from Universities across the country (and beyond) to get together and share their ideas and experiences of studying East Asia.
Our first conference was very successful and attracted over 40 presentations from PhD students/scholars from all over the UK and in total 70 PhD students and academics contributed to the day.
You will also be invited to draw upon the expertise of experienced scholars in a plenary session focused on the current hot topic: ‘The National and/or Regional Identity in East Asia’. We also aim to offer practical sessions such as ‘writing for publication’ and ‘conducting fieldwork in East Asia’.
CEAS are pleased to announce that they will financially support the accommodation and conference cost for all the PhD students who present their work at the conference.
Conference Theme
The theme of this conference is'Challenges for East Asia: The Past, Present & Future' The conference will explore both historical and contemporary issues relating to East Asia from interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives.
This perspective does not limit us to an event at one point of East Asian history, but instead provides a framework through which to explore general aspects of East Asia, be it culture; history; society; welfare; economy; security; public services; politics; environmental issues; international relations and others.
We aim to widen the frontier of those engaged in our discussion of East Asia by welcoming PhD students from any disciplinary background with an interest in East Asia’s past, present and future. By so doing, the BRIDGE conference will draw together multi-disciplinary perspectives to challenge and develop our understanding of this region.
We welcome proposals for papers on our main theme, but we will also consider the inclusion of other interesting presentations which contribute to East Asian studies.
You can present a paper, listen to others, or do both! We plan to provide an excellent opportunity for postgraduate students from Universities across the country (and beyond) to get together and share their ideas and experiences of studying East Asia.
Keynote Speaker
Professor Shaun Breslin (University of Warwick)
Professor Stephan Feuchtwang (London School of Economics)
