Alumni Profile: Leo Laughlin

What I gained from doing a PhD in the CDT in Communications

The CDT gave me excellent opportunities for industrial engagement. I have worked very closely with my industrial sponsor throughout the project, which has benefitted my research greatly and given me a better understand commercial demands in my field (radio transceivers for 4G/5G mobile devices). This engagement has been key in helping me to identify research opportunities and shape the direction of my research.

What I enjoyed most in my Ph.D

I have particularly enjoyed the level of freedom and creative control I have had over the course of my PhD, which has allowed me to identify and work on solving the problems which I find most interesting and fulfilling. The CDT also provides a generous travel budget and I have enjoyed many trips to conferences in the USA and Europe.

What I have done since graduating

After my PhD, my supervisors and I managed to secure further funding from my industrial sponsor and the research council, allowing me to stay on as a postdoc in Bristol and continue the research from my PhD project beyond the end of my PhD. This is a further testament to the high level of industrial engagement facilitated through the CDT.
