There is concern regarding the high sugar intakes in children's diets, and the low amounts of fruit and vegetables consumed. Regional dietary differences in the British Isles could underlie variations in health outcomes, but little is known about these differences. Our aim was to compare diets of children enrolled in observational birth cohort studies in the Isle of Man (IoM-ELSPAC) and in south-west England (ALSPAC). We will describe the results of comparisons of mean daily nutrient, and food and food groups intakes between the two groups, as well as comparisons with UK national dietary guidelines. Finally we will comment on how children’s diets in the two regions could be improved in the light of the increasing prevalence of childhood obesity and the recent UK recommendation to lower the intake of free sugars.
