1House of Commons briefing paper, December 207

  • In 2016, only 57.6% of UK graduates went to work for big businesses with 1,000 or more employees.
  • 34% of graduates were employed by a company that had fewer than 250 employees
  • One in six graduates worked for a business with fewer than 50 employees.2

Five benefits to an internship with an SME:

  • Gain practical experience of the workplace and develop professional skills, which will help you stand out in the selection process.
  • Use as a way into an organisation - employers increasingly recruit graduates from their pool of interns.
  • Grow your professional network:  in 2016, 23.9% of graduates working for a company with fewer than 50 employees used personal contacts to secure their job.
  • Develop a broad range of skills and knowledge: being part of a small team often involves taking on a variety of tasks and more responsibility sooner.
  • Industry insight: learn first-hand about how a business works and be closely involved in helping an organisation grow.

SME Internship Schemes

The University of Bristol run two internship schemes that enable you to gain quality, paid work experience from SMEs in the UK, including charities, social enterprises, and start-ups.

The internship was fantastic - I learned so much about the workings of a business. I gained a range of experiences that have developed my self-awareness and given me plenty to talk about in applications and interviews. I've come away more confident in my abilities and with a number of professional connections.
