Members of BRISK, namely Professor Willy Aspinall, Professor Steve Sparks and Dr Matthew Watson, have provided and continue to provide expert advice to the Government through the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) on the volcanic ash emergency of recent years. The eruption of the Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajokull in April and May 2010, caused widespread disruption to air traffic for several days over Europe.
SAGE was been set up by Sir John Beddington (then Chief Scientific Advisor to the Cabinet office). The work of the SAGE was divided into a number of tasks and sub-groups. Professor Aspinall is working on the prospects of future eruptions in Iceland and their potential to cause disruption to aviation. Professor Sparks and Dr Watson are working with the Met Office in a sub-group aimed at improving the ability of forecasting the dispersal of the volcanic ash.
