Dr Kevin McGuigan (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) gave a great Cabot seminar on 2 March about solar water disinfection. His slides are now online if you missed the lecture or would like to learn more about his work.
He presented a simple technology - using empty Coca Cola bottles to disinfect water by placing them in direct sunlight and letting solar UV kill disease causing pathogens.
Dr McGuigan conducted field trials in human populations around the world including: Cambodia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa. He found reduced incidences of diarrhoea, cholera and dysentry.
His research has had fantastic results globally and his solar disinfection method is now used by over 4.5 million people in over 55 countries around the world.
His powerpoint presentation is now posted on Cabot's Events Gallery if you missed the lecture or would like to learn more about his work.
