Celebrate the Chinese New year of the Rooster - Saturday 4th – Sunday 5th February 2017 11am-4pm

29 January 2017

It’s time to rule the roost this February with our Chinese New Year celebrations! Join the Botanic Garden at Bristol Museum and Art gallery to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The Botanic Garden includes a stunning Chinese Medicinal Herb Garden. Since herb gardens in China are normally just clearings in the forest, it was decided to give visitors a more aesthetic experience so the garden is constructed using the design principles of the Pleasure Gardens of Suzhou, near Shanghai. Key concepts include a bamboo Moon gate, laing (a pergola clothed with climbing  plants with defined views out to the landscape beyond the garden) and a contemplative pavilion.

Visitors’ spirits will be lifted by the sight and fragrance of Prunus mume ‘Beni-Chidori’ flowering outside the garden’s Welcome Lodge. Because it blossoms in the cold winter, the plum blossom is very highly prized and enjoyed at this time of the year.

Welcome in the Year of the Rooster with spectacular traditional and contemporary performances, stalls, workshops and activities.

Stalls throughout the museum will feature elements of Chinese culture, there will be a delicious Chinese inspired menu in the café and beautiful Chinese goods for sale in the shop. Pick up one of the museum  trails to search for Roosters throughout the museum!

The Year of the Rooster starts on 28 January 2017 and continues until 16 February 2018. According to the Chinese Zodiac people born in a year of the Rooster are observant, hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented.
