Building a better research culture
26 September 2019
Wellcome Trust are leading on building a better research culture – one that is creative, inclusive and honest. Expectations around how research is conducted need to be reimagined. Excellence should not just be what we do, but how we do it.
Jeremy Farrar, Wellcome Director, explains why Wellcome are putting research culture at the heart of everything they do in this powerful blog.
Together we can move towards a culture that:
- supports creativity, with ambitious and collaborative working across disciplines and institutions
- prioritises diversity and inclusion, so that everyone benefits from supportive relationships no matter what their background
- produces open research, which is conducted with honesty and integrity
Wellcome Trust launched an ambitious ‘Reimagine Research’ programme to understand and improve the working culture within research, in partnership with the research community. As part of it, Wellcome launched a global survey for those who conduct, support or have recently left the research profession.
This is an opportunity for you to share your opinions and perceptions of the culture of research and what changes you think are needed. Wellcome will publish a report on the findings later this year and will share the anonymised data for others to learn from. Based on this, Wellcome will create a shared set of goals which describe a great research culture with underlying indicators, which can be used to plan meaningful action and hold ourselves to account for progress.
