Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety Research Strand
The Elizabeth Blackwell Institute (EBI) focuses on research related to health and wellbeing. The Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety Research Strand explores the ethical, legal, and social issues in the biosciences, including health and social care.
The Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety Research Strand therefore encompasses work in law, philosophy, politics and the social sciences, rather than medical or clinical research related to health. Although it is directed towards human health and well-being, the strand's focus on health is broad and may include research on or related to animals and the environment.
With members drawn from across the University of Bristol and beyond, the strand will facilitate interdisciplinary research activities in the biosciences, including health and social care.
The Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety Research Strand is an interdisciplinary research community supported by the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute. The Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety strand aims to establish Bristol as a leader in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research into the ethical, legal and social dimensions of health and the biosciences. The research strand will unite and foster University of Bristol’s diverse expertise to explore the ethical, legal, and social issues in the biosciences.
Over a two-year period, the Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety Research Strand will hold a series of lectures, workshops and public engagement events, as well as providing support for initial interdisciplinary research endeavours. In the long-term, the strand hopes to establish a multidisciplinary Centre at the University of Bristol to produce world class research that contributes to improvements to health and well-being.
Bioethics, Biolaw and Biosociety Research Strand priorities and activities will be informed and guided by a multidisciplinary advisory board. A funding panel comprising strand leads and members of the advisory board will award small grants to support initial research ideas.
