Research interests

In my research group we focus on various aspects of the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems. One particular focus involves the use of benthic diatoms as indicators of ecological status in both rivers and lakes. We work on a number of aspects of lake functioning with a key interest in lake state switching and growth of periphyton, phytoplankton and submerged macrophytes. Another key area of research involves modelling the interaction between waterbirds and their food resources in freshwater lakes. We collaborate with the Environment Agency, Wessex Water, Buglife, The Widldfowl and Wetlands Trust, The Ponds Conservation Trust and a number of other academic institutions.
