Fungal Molecular Biology

Aspergillus oryzaeOur research group, as part of the Bristol Polyketide Group, is interested in using Molecular Biology techniques to solve problems. Currently our research focuses on using filamentous fungi as factories to produce and manipulate interesting biochemical compounds. We are particularly interested in a group of compounds called secondary metabolites which often have bioactive properties such as antibiotic activity.

Recent research:

We have recently expressed a whole secondary metabolite pathway in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus oryzae, producing five times the amount of secondary metabolite compound that is synthesised by the native organism. This pathway required the co-expression of four genes in the heterologous host. Some of our current research involves investigating methods to allow the co-expression of many more genes in Aspergillus oryzae.
