Applying for a course

Our aim is to attract the best and most committed students, no matter what their background. We offer six programmes leading in three years to an honours degree (Bachelor of Science):

Normally you apply for admission to one or more of these programmes; applications for Biology and Zoology are treated together, and since it is possible to change between these programmes it is not advisable to apply to more than one of them.

A-levels

Entry requirements are three A levels, with at least two (preferably three) in maths/sciences and always to include Biology. GCSE passes in Physical Science or Chemistry (or double-award Combined Science) and in Mathematics are required. See our list of preferred A-levels (Word, 19.5 KB).

Qualifications other than A-levels

Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, International or European Baccalaureate qualifications of an equivalent standard are fully acceptable, as are other appropriate national secondary education qualifications/grades. We also welcome applications from mature students and from those with non-standard (non A-level) academic backgrounds, or with other appropriate experience. Such applicants are advised to contact the admissions tutors to discuss what preparatory courses would be appropriate before making a formal application through UCAS. Applicants wishing to apply for deferred entry are not disadvantaged in any way.

Interviews

Because of the large numbers of applications we receive we do not normally interview candidates for Biology and Zoology or most of our joint degree programmes. However, suitable mature applicants and those with unusual academic backgrounds are interviewed.

Visiting the School

The University runs Open Days in June and September and you are encouraged to attend one of these scheduled days if you wish to visit the School and University before submitting your UCAS application. Details are sent out to Schools well in advance and further information is also available in the University Prospectus. Due to the nature of the School and the pressure on staff time, it is not possible to visit the School of Biological Science outside of scheduled Open and Preview Days.

Once you have been made an offer you will be given the opportunity to visit the School at one of the School Visit Days.
