PhD is a research-based degree that consists of three years full-time training supervised by one or more academic staff. The research project is an independent and original investigation in a specific area of biology and may be lab-based, field-based, theoretical or a combination of these elements. There are no taught modules, but additional research and transferable skills can be gained by attending courses, workshops and conferences. The PhD research project is written up as a thesis, which is assessed by two independent examiners; the candidate must also defend the thesis in an oral examination (viva voce). Funding is often by scholarship, but a PhD may be self-funded.
