Connect to shared folders

Please note: Most people in the School use Windows PCs but we can give Apple advice, provide software, and help get things working.

Your Apple computer must be connected to the Biological Sciences network or the VPN (see Hints).

  1. Open the Finder.
  2. Click Go, then Connect to Server.
  3. Enter a Mac-friendly address from the tables below.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Select Connect as: Registered User.
  6. For Name enter UOB\ followed by your University username. E.g. UOB\ab1234 or UOB\bzabc
  7. For Password enter your normal University password.
  8. Click Connect.
  9. Your network drive should open as a new volume in Finder.

Find your P: drive's Mac-friendly address

  1. Login to a Biological Sciences Windows PC, such as a C33 computer.
  2. Click the Start menu.
  3. Click Run.
  4. Type cmd and click OK. A black box should appear.
  5. Type net use in the box and press Enter.
  6. Find the entry for your P: drive. (You might need to scroll up.) Write down the last two words of the address. Replace the back-slash (\) with a forward slash (/). Examples:
    • Staff/bzabc
    • PhD/bzabc
    • MSc/ab1234
  7. Add your two words to end of this address:
    smb://is-c2b4x64.cse.bris.ac.uk/vfs8/Users/
