Aging in a social world
Aging is universal amongst vertebrates. For gregarious animals, the enhanced experience and physical deterioration that come with age can influence how individuals engage with their social worlds. On the flipside, social processes can themselves influence the pace at which individuals age, ultimately impacting on their longevity and ability to reproduce. I present evidence from two long-term mammalian datasets for the intersection between social processes and aging, and outline directions for future research in this rapidly growing field.
