The purpose of these placements is to give experience of biochemistry research to school students and to encourage them to consider a career in science. The School of Biochemistry is a busy department and we are involved in both teaching and research. We have a large number of researchers working on a variety of projects. Individual researchers are sometimes able to host placement students for short periods to give them experience of research in biochemistry.
Biochemistry is essentially the study of life processes at a molecular and cellular level. The majority of placements are laboratory-based, although some may involve computer modelling of biomolecular systems.
Due to Health and Safety rules and the highly specialist nature of the work we undertake we are unable to accept large numbers of students. There may also be restrictions on the type of work students can undertake while they are with us.
Applications will be circulated to all staff who have expressed an interest in hosting work experience students. It will be their decision as to whether they consider you a suitable candidate and whether they can accommodate the dates you are available.
When considering your application, staff will be looking for evidence of aptitude and enthusiasm for science and will also take into consideration the benefit you will receive from the placement. Their decision is final and cannot be appealed.
