Members of the School of Biochemistry regularly contribute to the University of Bristol’s “Science Alive” event held in the Galleries Shopping Centre, Broadmead, Bristol. This event is held every two years and is open to all members of the public to attend.
This year, Caroline McKinnon, Elaine Hill and Jacqui Oakley organised the school's exhibit for the event, focusing on DNA. Participants were invited to prepare DNA from a kiwi fruit and to understand how scientists study DNA by solving a scene of crime investigation. A giant DNA model was used to demonstrate the structure of DNA and what happens to it when it gets damaged. Much fun was had by all involved.
Science Alive is designed to be informative and provides numerous entertaining exhibits that give the University a chance to show the public the cutting edge research that is happening on their doorstep. The next Science Alive is planned for Spring 2013.
