Public Lectures and Events

We believe we have a duty to communicate our research to the public, in order to raise understanding and awareness of heart disease. At present we are doing this through public lectures and this website, but hope to expand our outreach activities in the future if funding is available.

Forthcoming events

25th November 2011, 6pm
INAUGURAL LECTURE - Walking to the WNTer Wonderland
Professor Sarah George, Professor of Cardiovascular Signalling

Reception Room, Wills Memorial Building, Queen's Road, Bristol

Heart disease is still the UK's biggest killer. The first coronary artery bypass was performed in 1960, but despite enhanced surgical techniques over the last 50 years, this surgery technique still requires improvement as the grafts themselves become diseased. This lecture will discuss Sarah's research journey over the last 20 years.

Organised by the Public and Ceremonial Events Office. No booking required.

A CHANGE OF HEART?
Repairing damaged hearts with regenerative medicine: bringing science research into patient care

Wills Memorial Building, Queen's Road, Bristol

What are the prospects for rebuilding heart tissue to repair the damage caused by a heart attack? Will it, one day, become a standard procedure? Will the devastation of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease that affect millions of people each year become a thing of the past?

Complementing the British Heart Foundation's 'Mending Broken Hearts' campaign, which is raising money for research to improve recovery after a heart attack, this year's public lecture will focus on the emergence of regenerative medicine in modern medical care.

The event will feature three different perspectives on regenerative medicine:

Come and hear about the groundbreaking research, funded by the British Heart Foundation, which is taking place in the here in the Bristol Heart Institute. Discover how it is being translated for use in the clinic, learn about the experience of taking part in a clinical trial, and discuss how stem cell science might revolutionize modern medicine in years to come.

Public lectures organised by the BHI are free and open to all; no booking required.  Followed by free wine reception.

This event is supported by the British Heart Foundation

HEARTFELT

Grant Bradley Gallery, Bedminster

The BHI have been invited by artist Jan Connett to join forces with her for the Heartfelt project, a "unique collaborative exhibition all about life journeys - and the life-changing 'heartfelt moments' that stop us in our tracks". Through Heartfelt, hundreds of people have created their own hearts - out of everything from fabric to feathers - to represent a something 'heartfelt' in the their lives.

With support from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and University of Bristol Centre for Public Engagement, these are being exhibited throughout September at the Grant Bradley Gallery.

There is the also the chance to meet members of BHI:

The Heartfelt exhibition is raising money for BHF, which funds research in the BHI, through the sale of the handmade hearts. Money will go towards BHF's 50th anniversary campaign
